Hall of mirrors

This blog is a mixture of our travel adventures and our new family adventures.
The title comes from a dumb blonde high school girl on a tour with us in Versailles who asked this question in every single room of the Palace.
The picture was taken while on our Honeymoon in China, on the Xian river.

Ares is 5 months old!

This has been a crazy week. Adam and I started playing on a softball team on Mondays, but now I think games are on Wednesdays instead (or too, I'm not sure). Had the dog and the baby with us for the first practice. Ares was kind of annoying, but he was overall really good. Adam played awesome!

Tuesday night we drove down to Muskingum to attend calling hours for a dear professor. He was Adam's music fraternity sponsor, and my wind ensemble director. He wasn't very old. I had his wife as a professor, and babysat his daughters (now in college) so it was very emotional seeing his family so sad. Lots of old friends gathered to honor him, and the PMA fraternity sang a beautiful song for him. Ares, for the most part, was very good. He absolutely LOVED Rich, and I don't think I had ever heard him laugh so hard for such a long time. Thanks Rich for entertaining him! So, one of the reasons I wanted a boy was so I could dress him in corduroy pants and a polo. Guess what he was in last night?! Yay! lol. It was too warm for the sweater vest I have. Ah well.

This weekend is going to be very different for me. I'm heading to Pittsburgh to go to a swimming party (that Adam was supposed to be at as well) all alone. Doug planned his role playing campaign that weekend, and me, being a sucker and can't say no to Adam, said that not only can he make me drive alone to Pittsburgh, but that he can take the baby with him (he begged to do that). I said as long as he stops by his parents' house, then he can have the baby. I'm a little sad that I won't have him with me this weekend, my friends want to see him, and I love having him around (especially in the pool), but I will be glad to be able to sleep through the night for once. (We've had a rough few weeks at night). I hope I can sleep and that I don't stay up worried that Ares keeps my in-laws awake all night! Right now, he seems to wake up at 11:30, 2:30 and 5:30. Very frustrating.

Here's some pictures from his 5 mo. bday. Lots of different outfits as we had some drool problems, lol.

I'm slowly starting to figure out this GIMP program. Hopefully I can have some cute pics of Ares up soon. I've decided to try and learn how to fix up pictures because I don't like the backgrounds of some really good pics.

My little boy is back!

I hope I'm not typing this prematurely, but I think I might have my little boy back! We got almost 10 hours of straight sleep last night. This even includes getting up in the middle of the night and putting his paci back in. We didn't have to do that! Whew, I missed my little guy!

He had an adventure yesterday. He visited Great Grandma and Grandpa Schmidt in the morning, went to the outlet store for hours with Grandma Venus and great Auntie Cindy and great Auntie Diane, and finished the day with dinner with GG (Great Grandma Walters), Uncle Dick (I think he's great-great uncle dick) (came up from FL), Uncle Justice, Grandma Venus, Grandpa Keith and daddy. I wasn't there because I had a dinner that I needed to attend for work. We went to Paladar Latin Kitchen and Rum Bar. It was very nice, (very trendy) and the food was excellent and the liquor flowed freely. They have the greatest Sangria ever! Of course, it looks like Ares had more fun with his food than I did....

Nothing to Post

Other than the fact that this has been the week from hell, not much is going on. Ares' reflux is exceptionally bad, he has a horrible cough that is so bad he chokes himself awake, his nose is as clogged as can be, and he slept for a total of 20 minutes all day Saturday after not sleeping on Friday night OR Saturday night.
Thank goodness Adam wanted to work on his Jeep all weekend long. We literally spent about 9 hours each day of this weekend at my parents house, so they helped me take care of Ares since Adam was outside all day. (I even got a 15 minute nap in!!)

Saturday night, I ended up doing the terrible thing of putting Ares on his stomach to sleep. He fell asleep (my guy, who HATES tummy time!) on his stomach, and then I flipped him back over after 10 minutes (cuz I don't want to be "that mom" who puts her kid on his tummy and then he dies of SIDS).

House is a mess, need groceries, energy tank is EMPTY and it's the start of my long work week. Wow!

(Jen, did the whole "Ferber" 4 minute thing. Worked pretty well to get him to fall asleep, but he'd only sleep for a half hour! I guess that's why they call them "baby steps". )

A trying week...

Ares seems to be pretty healthy again... in sound, however, some sort of demon has entered his body in the evenings. Quick! We need an exorcism! My son... who came into this world sleeping through the night (5 hours at a time, moving up an hour each week of his life) can not sleep for more than 45 minutes at a time. I think I might have brought the wrong child home from day-care. They do say that there's a look alike there, perhaps his mommy got Ares, and we got Davis. I think the thing that makes this the hardest is that my perfect dear husband (DH) who used to have all of the patience in the world, seems to have none with Ares. It sure doesn't make my life any easier. So now, after his 7th or 8th tantrum of the night, I'm up for work, listening to Adam yell at the baby while he warms his bottle for yet another feeding.
Tomorrow is my day to sleep in... will I get to? Doubtful.
Here's another cute pic:

Over the River and Through the Woods...

Ares went to the doctor today. He has a nasty cough. Sounds like he's trying to cough something up, then he breathes it in, and gets stuck in his lungs... sounds nasty. Not a great day at day-care I guess. Ares is now 15 lbs, 13 oz. No fever, and the doc said his lungs sound great (although, says his cough sounds nasty). She doesn't want to put him on medication for sinus infection in case it's not that, so we're going to leave it be. I may go out and get some saline solution as the doc suggested. Anything to make him better. As we assumed, Sunday night was terrible - so was Monday early morning. Now that he's got this cough, we put him to bed in his bouncer chair, and put the humidifier on, and prayed that he falls asleep quickly. About 40 minutes later, and an entire workout going up and down and up and down stairs, he's sleeping. I hope he doesn't get up at 4:15 again..

I have some wonderful pictures of this weekend. Adam and I (and Ares) had a great time. Ares seems to love everyone, and was mostly smiles all weekend (aside from the most horrific night on Saturday). Grandma and Jim got him this toy that rolls around on it's own, that I swore would be too old for him, but he had the best time with it!

It was great seeing Khirstin, Derek and Braeden this weekend too. They leave for FL this week, and we're not sure when we'll get to see them again. Hopefully we can get down there to visit sometime.... of course, we'll wait until we're sure that Ares will sleep through the night!

The drive home (6 hrs) was long, but not as bad as I was anticipating. Adam drove the entire way. Two motorbikes passed us up going about 120 MPH, but a cop came soon after, and after a neat police/semi truck collaboration, we soon passed a cop giving two bikers tickets on the side of the road. That was an entertaining 10 minutes (took that long for the cop to catch up to the bikers).

This is Ares just before going for a walk around the lake at Hudson Springs Park. He slept the entire 1.8 miles, but looked super cute the whole time=)
