Hall of mirrors

This blog is a mixture of our travel adventures and our new family adventures.
The title comes from a dumb blonde high school girl on a tour with us in Versailles who asked this question in every single room of the Palace.
The picture was taken while on our Honeymoon in China, on the Xian river.

Adam part II

When Adam knew he was going to marry me.
It was the next year when I was a Freshman at Muskingum College.  Adam was a Senior.  I had just broken up with my boyfriend from the summer (he said he wanted to marry me soon, blech, I was 18!) and I had been talking to one of Adam's frat brothers, Donny at the time.   One night, I went to a Phi Tau party with Adam and Donny and they both decided that drinking a 6 pack (each) and then going into a mosh pit (read - jumping all around) was a good idea.   (Not so much.)  In fact, it was downright miserable for all parties involved.  I didn't drink at the time (at all), so I was tasked with carrying them both back to their house, completely on the other side of campus.  Down the big hill, UP the big hill, (remember, this is Muskingum, I literally walked up hill both ways in the snow to school).

So each with a hand in my back pocket, I slowly dragged them both home - because neither of them could walk.  Tall skinny one on one side and the big tough Marine on the other (BTW, my legs burned for 3 days after that!!)  They convinced me to drag them to a house next door to theirs to continue the evening with friends, so I did just that.  Donny didn't stay long, and Adam ended up passed out with his head on my lap while I was sitting indian style on the ground (with his friends - again, me=sober) not-so-fun.  I shake Adam to try and wake him up so I can leave, and after a few minutes, he looks up at me, bites my thigh, says "Athena, someday I'm going to marry you." and then passes out again. I'm quite sure he was still dating someone at this time.  I dragged him back to his house and let his brothers take care of him.  A few weeks later, he asked me out, and haven't looked back since.   Who'd have thought, almost 13 years later, here's what we have:

To Do!!

Things to do:  My goal for 2013 (maybe except for #22-25)
  1. Make Ares' party invitations
  2. Make capes for Ares' party invitations
  3. Buy humidifiers for bedrooms (3)
  4. Paint curtains
  5. Hang curtains
  6. Paint baby's room
  7. Fix/paint Ares' 'new' dresser
  8. Move furniture to/from Ares' room
  9. Buy a new couch!!
  10. Create art for baby's room
  11. Create art for baby shower (not mine)
  12. Make bookshelf for baby's room (gave him Ares' old one)
  13. Get a toy box for toy room (from laundry room?)
  14. Remove cabinet from laundry room
  15. Move the wash basin in the laundry room to the basement
  16. Paint laundry room (or do something - I hate that room!!!)
  17. Take B&W still photos of toys to decorate toy room with
    1. Hulk
    2. All 4 ninja turtles
    3. Captain America
  18. Paint toy room
  19. Pick a paint color for the kitchen and just do it already!!
  20. Paint basement stairwell (because I'm sure if a couch gets put down there, it'll look awful)
  21. Buy heated towel rack for bedroom
  22. Paint foyer
  23. Paint Master
  24. Paint Spare Bedroom
  25. Add molding to the vaulted part of the foyer
  26. Put in built-ins and bench in master bedroom sitting room.
#9 - I decided after a small dinner party of 6, that we need more seating in our family room.  Like - NOW! I'd love to get it by Ares' birthday, but that's doubtful. (We're shopping this weekend and Ares' birthday party is in 3 weeks).

First Baby Project!

We're using the same bedding and stuff for the baby that we did with Ares (brown and white circles, dots and doggies) so I've decided to add some orange and teal to that.  I think I'm going to paint the walls a medium tan color, keep the decorations we had from Ares (brown and white) and use orange as an accent in curtains and other wall hangings.  The teal will be brought in in two places: 1) I'm painting an ugly dresser that we have the teal color and 2) I'll make a sign or painting or two with the color incorporated.

So:  My first project was!  Curtains!  I haven't purchased the paint yet, but Adam and I got the tape ready.  After reading a handful of blogs, I've learned that using wall paint on fabric works just fine.  I've done it on canvas before with no issues, as well as on my fake canvas on shoe box lids and nothing bled, so hopefully we can have success with this project too.  I can't wait to buy the paint!!

We started with two panels that were 84x40"  We split each panel into three sections using painters tape.  Each panel was 12 3/4 wide (center of tape to center of tape)

Then we marked 14" (84/6) down the side, the tape and the other side and started the diagonal lines doing inside, outside, inside, outside (accounting for the width of the tape on the panels we're not painting).  So while in the picture, some look wider than the others, once the tape is off, it'll all be the same width.

Adam then used scissors to cut the corners clean inside the parts that we were painting.  I think this was the most tedious part of the project.  Enter "You are the greatest husband in the world.  Thanks for putting up with my  - 'Let's go out and buy curtains NOW and then after we put Ares to bed start my project.  Yes, TONIGHT even though we work tomorrow.' craziness".  Best. Husband. Ever!

Just waiting for paint!  I've picked the color, just haven't purchased it yet.  Hopefully a quart  of paint will be sufficient.  I'm not a painting pro, I love the end results (normally, not in my kitchen), but I just don't do it often enough.  That damned full-time-job - show-me-the-money issue.
The chevrons that are open will be painted.  We didn't bother removing
the vertical lines from the parts that will be staying white.  We're lazy exhausted.

Adam Part I

It's Thursday! Which means many things.  For instance, one more day until our ultrasound!  One more day to see some out of town friends! One more day until my in-laws are in town!  One more day until the weekend! Oh, and it's Valentines Day too.

Adam and I have never been one to celebrate valentines day.  One year, he did get me a pink jacket, a hot chocolate maker, a warm blanket and some warm gloves, it was very cute, and most of it I still use.   But since I don't have much to post (my mom took my typical subject (Ares) for the night yesterday) I thought I'd bring a ton of  boredom romance to the post with a post on how Adam and I met, and how he knew I was the one.

The Meeting
This is Adam and his sister - AFTER he cut his hair.
Yes, that's him with short hair.  Not sure who hated it more,
his mom or me.
I met Adam when I was 16 and a Junior in high school.  I was visiting one of my friends at Muskingum College and she took me over to a fraternity house because she had drama practice (right across the street).   I won't lie, it was dirty, a little awkward, and the guys are all a little odd.  (I later learned to LOVE this about them.)   Anyhow, it was a quiet night (the guys were most likely playing Magic or one of their other RPG thingies) when I heard good music coming from someone's room.   I'm not sure what got into me, but I decided to check it out, and there was this tall skinny guy with hair almost as long as mine sitting at his computer in a room with an adorable  stinky ferret. (Oh how I learned to hate that ferrit.) It was Adam's room.  I'm not sure how long we talked for 4 hours, 8 hours, who knows but when it was around 2AM, he climbed up to his loft and threw down a pillow for me to crash on his floor.  It was cold and I used my winter coat to cover up with (for the record, it was my old reversible Adidas coat, my favorite jacket of all time, *sigh* Wish I still had it.)   My friend came to get me in the morning.  Odd, I know.

I had visited my high school friends a handful of times in the year and a half since then, also seeing Adam and Doug, Pat, Justin, Wilkey, Sully, Tom, Kirk, Buddha, Stein, Jira and a handful of other guys, probably every other to every three months.  I was like their friend's annoying kid sister, they didn't know if they should all ignore me because I was still in high school, or ask me out  because they had crushes on me.  None of them would ignore me, and only a few asked me out.  Long distance things don't work out, so I didn't see any of them.  A handful of them came to my HS graduation party (not Adam, he didn't notice the flyer in his frat house and Doug didn't let him know he was coming up), and many celebrated when I chose Muskingum College as my university of choice...

To Be Continued... Okay, so I'm long winded/ a little too detailed, I'll save the "How he knew he was going to marry me" story for later.  I'll post something tomorrow, exclaiming how excited I am to have a little girl or little boy growing inside of me!  I'll be excited either way, but I'll at least spill the beans to the world 6 people who read this.

What do we think the gender is? The pregnancy is exactly like Ares, and I keep saying 'he'. Ares insists that it's a girl, and keeps calling the baby 'she' and references it as 'her'. All of my dreams warn me it's a girl, and is preparing me for that. I'm kind of hoping for another boy, but I know once he's an adult, I'll want the girl bond that my mom and I have. So really, I want both equally and I just can't wait to start painting a bedroom and either start shopping or washing lots of laundry!

Wii and Food

Does anyone else's kid eat half or 3/4 of their dinner, claim they're not hungry anymore - and then a half hour later, cry and whine because they're 'starving'.   This is a daily occurrence fight at our house.  In fact, yesterday, Ares was soo 'starving' that his knee hurt.  Huh. Imagine that.

We have introduced Ares to the Wii games.  Not that we've played since I was pregnant with him, but Saturday night we had some time before  bed, and thought it would be fun to play some bowling with Ares.   He had a blast  (and did very well by himself).  He bowled, played baseball, used the Fit to headball soccer balls and ski.  The skiing he didn't do so well at, the soccer ball one - well, I can honestly say, I don't remember hearing him laugh/giggle so much - ever.  Especially when those shoes came flying at him and hit him* in the head, haha.  Wow, did he enjoy that.

*by 'him', I mean his Wii character, which has blonde hair, brown eyes, blonde eye brows a nose that 'looks just like mine' and a mustache.  Yes, he pretty much designed his own Wii character to look like him, but with a mustache. A very blond mustache.  Looks a little like a more frightening looking Danny Bonaduce.

Very Random Facts

  • While I still put jalepenos on everything, my newest obsession is Oatmeal Cream Pies.  Cannot.Get.Enough.  I just finished one, and I want more.  Ugh!
  • Ares says I'm not allowed to say "Guess what?" before I tell him I love him.   He says "'I love you' is not a 'guess what'".

Arby's

Adam was getting home late tonight, we were 35 minutes from home and it was 6:30 and Ares hadn't eaten yet, so I asked him if he wanted a burger from McDonald's or if he wanted a roast beef sandwich from Arby's. (Hello run-on sentence!) Surprisingly (to me) he screamed Arby's, and got VERY excited.  (So did I, as I prefer Arby's to McDonalds as well!)

He decided he doesn't like Arby's sauce anymore, so he only puts 2/3 of a packet of horsey sauce on his sandwich ('but not like a real sandwich, right mom?') and loves it.  He also dips his potato cake into a heavy horsey sauce mixture with Arby sauce.

He has also stopped picking out Jalepenos from the foods I make.  He just eats them as is.  Not quite out of the jar like me, or even on nachos with cheese yet, but he's sure getting close with that other spicy stuff he'll eat!  (3 years 10 months 1 week and 6 days old)

NRG

I love those three letters - when I have it.  It seems like I have been posting a lot about it, but man, it's SO  nice to have it again.  The exhaustion was so terrible, and now it's GONE!  Yesterday, I put away Ares' clothes, I cleaned out his closet, put clothes that are too small into storage, cleaned out the baby's room and closet (for the most part) and started putting stuff into the guest room closet.  Go-me!

Oh, and I'm already sick of my maternity clothes - I've been wearing them on and off for 3 weeks now, haha.

Living with a Superhero

It's nice living with a superhero.  It's almost like living with a teenager.  I never know when he will be in the house, I never know if it's a 'good' superhero or a 'bad' superhero, but I always feel protected.  Take last week, for example, Raphael granted me with his presence for dinner.  He's kind of a moocher, and he even told me what to make, but eh, I'll take safety from an armed superhero when I can get it.

This weekend was a fun one for Ares.  He went to Eve's birthday party on Saturday, where nearly every one of his classmates also attended, it was pretty crazy, but the kids all had a great time.   The rest of the day he spent with Grandma and Papa (not going to Sesame Street Live, that's next month, mom) sledding and hanging out while Adam and I cleaned the house.  (Yay for energy!!)

He woke up Sunday with an upset stomach and his face looking like he was a zombie.  Actually, this picture doesn't do it justice, he looked BAD.   My three year old (3!!) managed to realize he was going to- or in the process of throwing up, and he ran to the bathroom and got it ALL in the toilet.  Most kids can't make it to the bathroom, amazingly mine did.  I couldn't praise him enough (I had to let him know how proud I was so that he'd do it again if necessary.).  This was the first time since he was 6 months old that he got sick like that.  (Of course, that's not counting peanut encounters.)

The funny thing was he didn't notice the dry/rash around his face (thank goodness), he didn't lose ANY energy, he was a complete bundle of hyperness all day. He told me he wasn't a zombie, because zombies can't run and he can run super fast.  He took a 3 hour nap (and I woke him up, he'd have slept MUCH longer). Three hours later, around 8:00,  he finally settled down.  We cuddled during the Super Bowl (I had to skip the party - but still sent Adam to have fun) and I'll be honest, if I get sick, it was totally worth those 40 minute of US time.  Adam's staying home with him today - I called to see how he was doing, and I could hear him 'Hulk Smash' everything in the background.  No lack of energy there, even though the fever is still there.
